Passion for Hospitality Excellence in Amsterdam!

It was our great pleasure to host the EuroCHRIE 2010 conference in Amsterdam, which lived up to the conference theme and delivered a 'Passion for Hospitality Excellence'.

The event, which has held at the Mövenpick hotel in Amsterdam from 25-27 October, attracted more than 250 delegates from universities around the world, together with representatives from the industry. The attendees were treated to presentations on the latest research in hospitality and tourism, and were able to participate in discussion during the stimulating events programme.

The event proved once again to be an excellent opportunity to link up with university partners to discuss academic cooperation. Over 115 research papers were presented, including four inspiring and stimulating keynote speakers. Students from our universities proved their professionalism and enthusiasm by participating in a large part in the organization. The students prepared and led the 'Amsterdam Experience' which featured touristic highlights of Amsterdam including the Heineken Experience, the Amsterdam historical museum and the Jordaan district were visited and discussed within the context of the conference theme.

During the EuroCHRIE gala and awards dinner the board of EuroCHRIE expressed their thanks to the organizers for an outstanding conference that established the names of Saxion Hospitality Business School and Stenden International Hotel Management as centers of excellence in education and research in tourism and hospitality.

We thank all participants, keynote speakers, students and presenters once again for making EuroCHRIE Amsterdam 2010 such a success and we wish the organization committee of EuroCHRIE Dubrovnik 2011 all the best.

We hope to meet you in 2011 at Dubrovnik, and would be delighted to welcome you at anytime to our universities in the Netherlands in Deventer (Saxion Hospitality Business School) and Leeuwarden (Stenden International Hotel Management).

Kind regards,

Rients Jorna MA, Dean Saxion Hospitality Business School in Deventer
Dr. Craig Thompson, Academic Dean, Stenden International Hotel Management in Leeuwarden

A message from Jouni Ahonen, EuroCHRIE president 2010 - 2011

On behalf of the board and as the President of EuroCHRIE, I would like to express our warm thanks to the Dutch organizers of EuroCHRIE Conference 2010. It was hosted by Stenden International Hospitality Management and Saxion Hospitality Business School. Especially their students did an outstanding job. Maureen Brooks summed that "Students were great ambassadors of their schools and they should be given recognition of their outstanding efforts". They had that required passion for hospitality excellence. The organizing team took all efforts to ensure that we had another memorably conference in the great city of Amsterdam. The planning and running of the conference is always a challenging task. Our hosts did it with an excellent score and with smile in their face.

More than 250 EuroCHRIE Conference delegates had the opportunity to share ideas, discuss the industry and education issues and create networks. There were many notable comments on the quality of the keynote speakers: Prof. Dr. Catrien Santing put hospitality in historical Erasmus perspective; Hans van Driem from Holland Business Promotion Office presented his interesting ideas on Destination Branding; Michael Levie, CEO of citizenM hotelgroup did talk and gave a clear example of innovation in Hospitality and Louis J. Frankenhuis expressed his vision about sustainability, wilderness protection and tourism. It is good to know that only 1% of the space in Europe is in the wild condition and if you want to see wolfs or brown bears in nature, you may visit for example, Finland.

On the top of keynote speakers, there was a variety of educational and industry-related activities - the most importantly researchers presented their papers. I got feedback from many delegates, which enjoyed the high quality of those presentations. ICHRIE President, Cynthia Deale stated "I listened and learned a great deal about hospitality management and thank everyone for the warm EuroCHRIE welcome and a wonderful conference experience".

EuroCHRIE conference provided an exceptional opportunity to meet new partners to future collaboration, not forgetting the social program. The Opening Ceremony, Receptions and Gala Dinner increased our enjoyment and provide remarkable experiences. An important part of the conference is the awards ceremony. This year the winner of Emerald Award was Michael Davidson and EuroCHRIE Amsterdam 2010 Student Award was Florian Aubke. EuroCHRIE Institute of Hospitality Education Research Award was given to the topic of 'Strengthening Curriculum Through Student Learning Outcome Assessment in Experiential Learning' , which was presented by Sheri Dressler, University of Central Florida, Kettil Cedercreutz, University of Cincinnati and Amanda Pacheco, University of Central Florida. EuroCHRIE Industry Award went this year obviously to our host hotel: Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre. What a great job they did! EuroCHRIE Laureate Hospitality Award winner was Phil Race and EuroCHRIE Nestlé Pro Gastronomia Award winner George Ortiz. EuroCHRIE President's Award was presented to our past president Ron Carpenter, who concluded that "When I arrived at the conference in Amsterdam I had a special feeling, like always, because I was coming home - to my EuroCHRIE family".

In Amsterdam delegates were able to see bikes, bridges, cultural attractions, canals, houseboats, markets, etc. Many of us enjoyed the great restaurants of the city. Heineken Experience was something special and one delegate said that "walking in the red light district in the rain was very different". Next year EuroCHRIE Conference will be in Dubrovnik and the conference theme will be Tourism and Hospitality, Drivers of Transition. Vidimo se u Dubrovniku - See you in Dubrovnik.

Once more I would like to give my sincere thanks to the conference organizing committee and everyone involved in planning and running the conference in Amsterdam. With this kind of passion for hospitality excellence I feel privileged to be the president of the EuroCHRIE family.

Jouni Ahonen

EuroCHRIE President 2010-2011

Key note speakers

Four inspiring key note speakers presented at EuroCHRIE Amsterdam 2010:

Mr. Michael Levie, CEO citizenM
Innovation in Hospitality

Michael Levie is CEO of the young, innovative, awardwinning citizenM hotelgroup. He talked about innovation in Hospitality. 'Mobile citizens know what they like in a good hotel and what they don't need from a bad one. What they like is affordable luxury including stylish design, the best entertainment, sociable atmosphere, a comfortable bed and big fluffy towels. They need a hotel in a good location but one where they can rest easily. CitizenM acted on these needs, wishes and desires. The result is a unique, hotel experience for an affordable price' says Michael Levie.

Louis J. Frankenhuis, Chairman PanParks
Sustainability, wilderness protection and tourism

Louis J. Frankenhuis presented his vision about sustainability, wilderness protection and tourism. 'PAN Parks applies a truly integrated approach combining wilderness protection and sustainable tourism development. I believe that wilderness protection and tourism go well together. It's my aim to take PAN Parks Foundation into its next stage of development after the first 10 years of establishing the organization' says Louis Frankenhuis.

Prof. Dr. Catrien Santing, Professor Medieval History, University of Groningen
Hospitality in historical perspective

Catrien Santing presented hospitality within an historical perspective. She holds a chair in medieval and cultural history at the University of Groningen (NL) and is convinced that academic historians should not retreat to their ivory towers but demonstrate the general public the topical value of historical knowledge. Catrien Santing: 'the passion for hospitality would benefit from a balance between ethics and business'. In her presentation she therefore explored, from a historical point of view, the concept of the hospitality business within the context of sincere charity one side and the earning of money on the other.

Hans van Driem, Managing Director, Holland Business Promotion Office
Destination branding

Hans van Driem presented his vision on Destination Branding. He is working for Holland Business Promotion Office (HBPO). The objective of HBPO is to coordinate the international promotion of economic sectors of Holland such as foreign investments in biotechnology, logistics and large hospitality and leisure projects. 'Destinations are not discovered anymore but they are created' says Hans van Driem.

Gala dinner EuroCHRIE Amsterdam 2010: food with passion, surprise act and awards

Food with passion

The Gala dinner was based on the New Dutch Cuisine developed by the Dutch Master Chef Albert Kooy. This sustainable, animal and environmentally friendly, healthy and contemporary cuisine is inspired by the Dutch cuisine, combined with international ingredients and cooking techniques. This all resulted in exquisite dishes including: beetroot baked in salt crush, chutney from yellow beetroot and lacquered shitake and Brussels' sprouts praline served with butter chips and babipang from beef brisket hachee.

Stringcats
The Dutch Stringcats enlightened the participants with their lively surprise act with violins.

Awards
An important part of the conference is always the awards ceremony. This year the winner of Emerald Award was Michael Davidson and EuroCHRIE Amsterdam 2010 Student Award was Florian Aubke. EuroCHRIE Institute of Hospitality Education Research Award was given to the topic of 'Strengthening Curriculum Through Student Learning Outcome Assessment in Experiential Learning' , which was presented to Sheri Dressler, University of Central Florida, Kettil Cedercreutz, University of Cincinnati and Amanda Pacheco, University of Central Florida. EuroCHRIE President's Award was presented to our past president Ron Carpenter (pictured above right), who concluded that "When I arrived at the conference in Amsterdam I had a special feeling, like always, because I was coming home - to my EuroCHRIE family".

Welcome from EuroCHRIE Dubrovnik 2011, October 19th – 22nd.

The American College of Management and Technology/Rochester Institute of Technology (ACMT) is proud to announce the hosting of the EuroCHRIE 20011 conference in the Pearl of the Adriatic – the beautiful city of Dubrovnik. The organizers of the EuroCHRIE 2011 conference cordially invite all interested EuroCHRIE members and those who are about to join the EuroCHRIE family, to be a part of this conference, which is to take place from October 19th – 22nd, 2011.

For the past 12 years, ACMT has made its home in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Dubrovnik, in its intact beauty and tradition that goes back for centuries, is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. The city, with a population of 45,000 that hosts over 520,000 tourists per year, is known for its invincible city walls, its famous main street the Stradun, beautiful churches, squares and streets that will invite you for long walks and take you back through various periods of history engraved in stone.

ACMT was founded in 1995 when the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports wished to establish a private institution of higher education in Croatia. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), in New York was considered the best partner for this endeavor. RIT's strong philosophy of applied, practical education and its reputation for formulating and sustaining successful international partnerships made for a powerful partnership. The agreement to create the college was signed in the spring of 1997, establishing ACMT as the first private institution of higher education in Croatia, and, more importantly, as a model for foreign universities operating in Croatia. This partnership with RIT enabled ACMT to offer its students dually accredited diplomas. The college has undergraduate programs in Hospitality and Service Management, and Information Technology. Executive-style Masters Degree programs in Service Leadership and Innovation, and Human Resource Development are also offered. All degree programs are taught in English.

The main topic of EuroCHRIE 2011 is "Tourism & Hospitality, Drivers of Transition", which is sure to attract a multitude of inspiring papers to be presented at the conference. This theme is imagined to present how the tourism and hospitality industries have acted, and continue to act, as an economic and sociologic drivers to the changes which have occurred, and continue to occur in transitional countries. The organizers believe that it is an appropriate and wide-reaching topic as our industry continues to become more global, and as there continues to be greater numbers of individual countries, and parts of the world, undergoing this transition.

We are looking forward to you at EuroCHRIE 2011 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where we will surely deliver an unforgettable experience of combining old with the new, as well as combining business with pleasure. The official web site for EuroCHRIE 2011 is www.eurochrie2011.hr ; the call for papers will be posted online by end of November 2010, and information on hotel accommodation and flight connections will be posted by January 2011.
